2024’s Sports Illustrated Swimsuit rookie, Penny Lane, isn’t just making waves in the modeling world; she’s also a self-proclaimed “racketista,” a term she proudly uses to express her love for all racket sports. It all started with tennis, but a visit to a tournament in Acapulco, Mexico, opened her eyes to a new passion: Padel.
Recalling her experience, Lane says, “I was obsessed with it. [My friend and I] were playing every day. We [said], ‘When we go back to L.A., we need to start playing it.’” But back in Los Angeles, the Padel scene was disappointingly scarce. “It’s really hard to get onto any private courts,” she notes, reflecting on the unexpected lack of facilities.
Undeterred by the challenge, Lane, driven by her love for the sport and the “tennis aesthetic,” joined forces with photographer Grace Adèle. Together, they embarked on a mission to revolutionize the local Padel scene by launching the Pleasure Padel Club. Their vision? To infuse the sport with a sense of community and a retro-inspired style. “Our goal is to make Padel a bit more cool and have that kind of cool, chic aesthetic to it,” Lane explains.
Lane’s sporting enthusiasm extends beyond the Padel courts to the increasingly popular game of pickleball. Initially resistant, she admits, “I was very much against it,” but has since come around: “I’ve been converted to think it’s cool.” Lane appreciates the accessibility and fun of both sports, describing them as “really fun,” “quick,” and “easy” games that “anyone can play.”
Lane’s journey from tennis courts to fashion photoshoots and now to spearheading a stylish Padel revolution showcases a unique blend of sportsmanship and style. With her efforts, Padel isn’t just a game – it’s a lifestyle.
