Former Tennis Champion Jared Palmer to Compete in The US Open Padel Championships

October 4, 2024

Jared Palmer, a multi-Grand Slam winning tennis champion, is set to embark on an exciting new chapter in his illustrious sporting career this Friday, 4 October. Palmer will compete in the inaugural US Open Padel Championships at Padel Haus Dumbo in New York City—24 years after his victory at the US Open Tennis Championships.

Palmer, who won the US Open Mixed Doubles in 2000 and the Wimbledon Men’s Doubles in 2001, shared his excitement about the upcoming event: “In terms of personal satisfaction, it’d be up there pretty high. I love playing, and having played the tennis US Open, it’s really cool to be playing a US Open in a different sport. So obviously, to do well would be really satisfying.”

The US Open Padel Championships, organized by the United States Padel Association (USPA), will be the fourth and final major event in the 2024 Nox USPA Circuit. With a $15,000 prize pool equally divided between the men’s and women’s divisions, the competition is set to attract top-tier talent from around the globe. Representing 15 different nations, this inaugural tournament will mark a new era for padel in the United States.

Palmer, paired with Swedish partner Henry Gill, will be one of the 32 teams vying for the championship title. Their first match is scheduled for 10 am EST on Friday, where they will face the duo of Jemia and Fernandez. Padel, traditionally played in a doubles format, naturally complements Palmer’s strength in tennis doubles. Reflecting on the crossover, Jared Palmer noted, “There’s obviously a lot of similarities to tennis doubles—working with your partner, moving together at the net, and covering the middle. Those instincts have definitely helped me from having played doubles.”

Now residing in Sweden, Palmer first discovered padel after moving there with his wife. Like many tennis players who’ve transitioned to padel, Palmer embraced the new challenge and has witnessed the sport’s rapid growth in the United States. “It’s a great sport and has a bright future and a lot of potential in the U.S. as a spectator sport. It’s fun to be a part of the first of many U.S. Opens,” Palmer shared. Although excited to compete, he is modest about his chances, saying, “There’s a lot of really, really good players, so I’m not too focused on winning the tournament.”

The Pro Padel League (PPL), North America’s premier professional padel league, serves as the title sponsor for the US Open Padel Championships, while Padel Haus Dumbo hosts the event. Padel Haus, known for its world-class facilities, community engagement, and commitment to promoting a healthy lifestyle through padel, is the perfect venue for this landmark tournament. The collaboration between the PPL, USPA, and Padel Haus is expected to deliver a high-quality experience for both players and fans alike.

With the inaugural US Open Padel Championships poised to make history, Jared Palmer and other competitors will usher in a new era for padel in the U.S., and spectators are in for a thrilling weekend of world-class padel action.
