Lisa Phillips and Abigail Tordoff have achieved a significant milestone in their careers, claiming their first international title at the FIP Bronze Kuala Lumpur. The British pair, seeded second in the tournament, demonstrated their dominance with a convincing 6-1, 6-4 victory over the top-ranked duo Anastasia Ryzhova and Lucia Lopez.
Phillips and Tordoff’s path to victory was particularly impressive as they won the tournament without dropping a single set, overcoming several top 100-ranked opponents along the way. This victory marks a high point for British padel, with Phillips and Tordoff becoming the fifth and sixth British female players to secure a FIP-level title in the past two years.
“I’m so happy to have won my first FIP title,” said Phillips. “I’ve worked incredibly hard over the recent months and have come close a few times, having battles against the top 100 players, it feels amazing to finally get there.”
Tordoff also expressed her excitement, emphasizing the special bond she shares with Phillips on the court: “It is extra special to have done it with Lisa as we played our first ever padel competition together over three years ago now. We make a perfect on-court team.”
This victory in Kuala Lumpur not only boosts the confidence of Phillips and Tordoff but also highlights the growing strength of British padel on the international stage. With the Euro Padel Cup in Madrid approaching (July 7-13), their success serves as an inspiration for the entire GB women’s team.
“I am incredibly excited for padel in GB at the moment, and the levels are continually improving, which I feel is a direct result of the greater focus and support that’s going into the sport directly from the LTA,” Tordoff added.
The duo’s achievement follows the semi-final run of British No.1 Christian Medina Murphy and his Spanish partner Alberto Garcia Jimenez in the same tournament, further demonstrating the increasing competitiveness of British players in international padel.
